Richard Yeomans studied Fine Art at Coventry College of Art and the University of Newcastle-on-Tyne during the 1960s. He trained as a secondary school teacher at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, and later gained an MA in art education at the University of Central England and a Ph.D at the Institute of Education, University of London. In 1975 he was a Teacher Fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Until his retirement in 2004, Richard Yeomans was a senior lecturer and co-ordinator for Art and Design at the Institute of Education, University of Warwick. Since the 1960s, Richard Yeomans has travelled widely in the Middle East and his studies of Islamic Art and Architecture provide much of the content of both his paintings and books. His books include 'The Story of Islamic Architecture', 'The Art and Architecture of Islamic Cairo', and the 'Art and Architecture of Ottoman Istanbul.'
