Description

The Flaggy Shore in the Burren, County Clare, was the subject of the poem Postscript, by Seamus Heaney, and I have borrowed the title for this piece of work from a line of the poem: "you are neither here nor there". On this exposed coast, when a storm blows in from the Atlantic, the paving that gives this place its name disappears underwater, and when the tide is full in the waves quite often wash over the narrow road that runs parallel to the sea. In stark contrast to this, on a calm day when the tide is out, the stunning paving that appears creates a scene of breathtaking beauty. The inspiration for this painting came on such a calm day, and as I walked along the shore it was late evening with darkness approaching and patches of the fading light on the rocks were casting intriguing shadows on the surface of the limestone paving.
