Description
The tidal lake in the image is known as Coronroo Lake in Mountscribe, on the west coast of County Galway. The ancient water mill has a crack down the centre that almost divides it in two. The crack is believed to have been caused by a major earthquake, with its epicentre in the Atlantic Ocean, that almost totally destroyed Lisbon in 1755. The painting is an attempt to capture the scene as the tide is full in and the sun is just about to disappear below the horizon.
