Description
The figure facing the viewer wears a top hat, but is otherwise informally dressed.
He wears a prominent baby boy's dummy around his neck as if it was a mayoral
or livery collar, or even a pair of binoculars at the races. The subject's facial
expression and the faux gravitas of the muted 'old master' colour palette, the
descriptive modelling and skin texture, belie the painting's absurdity, and so present
a sardonic visual metaphor for our age.
