Description
A casual walk along a forest track in Norfolk can lead you back into the desperate days of World War One. The battlefields of France had an insatiable appetite for timber and vast swathes of French woodland were felled and carted into the trenches. Standing trees were also destroyed by shell fire. Consequently, back in Blighty after the war, it was decided to boost supplies of timber by planting a forest over the lonely heathlands of Breckland. This print was made from a drawing made on a walk along track 110. The ways through the forest are wide and the mowing besides the vehicle paths gives rise to long sweeps of wild flowers.
