After a lifetime of heavy drinking and a range of undiagnosed conditions, he collapsed into a coma and died in New York City at the age of 39. He wrote, 'Though they go mad they shall be sane, though they sink through the sea they shall rise again; though lovers be lost love shall not; and death shall have no dominion.'
