Description
This installation was made for The Quay Arts, Disco Exhibition, Newport, Isle of Wight. The memory of a visit to a night club with a disco in the 1980's was the basis for this piece of work. The disco was very crowded, the music very loud, and flashing lights. A very different experience from Victor Sylvester's ballroom dancing.
Disco was made for a specific site. It needed to be floor standing, and to be viewed from above. It required a dark space with mains electricity available.
I did not include actual sound. Speakers could have been installed with the lighting, but the flashing lights had a pulse of their own. This appeared to be enough.
During a visit to the New Theatre Oxford in the 1950's I was lucky enough to see the Spanish dancer, Antonio. I recall at some point during the performance, dancers were jumping onto wine glasses. This is where the idea to use drinking glasses in “Disco” came from.
Black painted wooden box.
Strings of disco lights.
Two layers of acrylic plastic sheets.
254 plastic wine glasses.
A pair of ladies and gents dancing shoes.
