Description
UDO (Communion in the Igbo language) is part of the I RELEASE MY COLOURS series of artworks, exploring ideas of identity, ancestry, and encounters with time, space, and place. These works contain ruptures and imperfections giving access through the layers and creating new spaces. Disruptions create a shift, cause movement, and force innovation.
In this painting that I began in 2019, I was thinking about mental well-being and finding a way through the colourful chatter of thoughts and experiences, the interruptions and distractions, the trauma and healing, to make space for peace with oneself, with the universe. By 2021 when the faces emerged, I was considering the importance of listening and taking notice of your inner dialogue when it is positive and congruent with selfhood; a communion with loving narratives that are handed down from the ancestral lines.
