Description
The use of the term "Black Dog" to describe depression was popularised by Winston Churchill. In a letter to his wife Clementine he wrote - "he (the dog) seems quite away from me now - it is such a relief. All the colours come back into the picture". This was the inspiration for this painting. The colours, and the shadowy form of the dog are both metaphors for the lurking black mood that follows never too far behind, waiting to turn all the colours grey.
