Description
Alegria is based on one from a series of photographs that Susana took of herself. They reflect on her difficult childhood, and resonate with the line by Kierkegaard: "The greatest hazard of all, losing one's self, can occur very quietly in the world, as if it were nothing at all. No other loss can occur so quietly; any other loss - an arm, a leg, five dollars, a wife, etc. - is sure to be noticed.“
The painting combines the photograph with another taken at a funfair when Susana was about 9. She remembers this scene because it was from a brief period which was “the happiest in my life … I had a tonne of friends, was doing great at school, even had a 'boyfriend', and was generally a happy go lucky child … the word at the top reads Alegria - Joy in English”
