As the world of art continues to evolve and expand, it can be challenging to keep up with the latest talent. To help you stay ahead of the curve, we've curated a short list of our UK visual artists who are making waves in the industry and are definitely worth keeping an eye on in 2023. From painters to mixed media artists, these creatives are pushing the boundaries and producing stunning works that are not to be missed.

Ije

Contemporary mixed media artist

Winter 4 - Adventures in Wind and Water, Mixed Media

2022 was a landmark year for Ije, pronounced (eejay), marked by numerous achievements and milestones. These included two highly-regarded exhibitions in London, one of which resulted in the purchase of a large painting for a prominent corporate art collection in the city.

Additionally, IJE was one of three artists in England to curate an exhibition in Rugby, and participated in the successful Warwickshire Open Studios event, showcasing works from 14 talented artists at 'Art at the Alex'. The year was rounded off with IJE's selection for the Rugby Open 2022, and her inclusion in the 'Outside In' national art exhibition, titled "Humanity," which just recently finished its run at Sotheby's New Bond Street, and is set to tour to Glasgow and Brighton later this year.

2023 is already off to a busy start, with the arrival of new paintings and sculptures, further solidifying IJE's position as a leading force in the world of contemporary art.

Michael Hemming

Abstract paintings, interpretations of the Cornish coast

Cornish Shafts, oil on canvas

Michael Hemming's approach to studio painting is driven by a combination of imagination and memory. The two elements play varying roles in each of his paintings, sometimes starting with a memory and other times with imagination, ultimately merging in different proportions. When working directly from his source material, usually outdoors, he is influenced by the light and his immediate observations, which are abstracted to varying degrees to achieve the desired expression.

Michael's main source of inspiration comes from the rugged landscape of the South coast, from Dorset to Cornwall, which offers abundant dramatic seas and skies. He often incorporates abstract figures into the work, adding a human element to his landscape art.

Hemming is dedicated to exploring new methods and techniques through experimentation, finding excitement in the process, and hoping to engage the viewer in the same way. He is excited to announce his new series of paintings for 2023, 'Tin Mines and Lighthouses'.

Gill Bustamante

Contemporary Landscape Painting
The Gamechanger by Gill Bustamante
The Gamechanger, oil on canvas

"Based in Sussex, Gill Bustamante finds immense joy in taking walks near her home, observing wildlife and breathtaking views that ignite her imagination. What sets Gill apart from other artists is her ability to depict the spiritual essence of wildlife and landscapes, rather than just their physical appearance. Possessing a child-like wonder, she strives to uncover the magic that lies beyond the veil.

Gill translates what she sees into stunning artworks, often large-scale, hoping to inspire others to appreciate nature and the world around them. Gill says "If all I achieve is make someone think twice about dumping a mattress or shooting a deer, I feel I have made some progress."

For those who value wildlife and nature, and paintings that reflect these elements, this artist is definitely the one to watch.

Sandra Haney

Painting

Northallerton - Romanby, oil on canvas

Sandra Haney's work is inspired by the local landscapes in the North of England, with a focus on the seasons, weather, and atmosphere of the location, rather than specific landmarks. Immersion in the landscape provides both calm and inspiration for the artist. Sandra typically works in oils, either en plein air or from notes, sketches, and photographs that are later developed in the studio.

Recently, several of Sandra's artworks have been purchased for a luxury interior design project for Omaze, a multinational platform that raises funds for charity. Her landscape paintings have also been selected for publication in the international LandEscape Art Review and were the subject of an in-depth article following an interview.

The artist's work has garnered international attention and has sold at several exhibitions, including a juried open exhibition of painters UK at Gallagher and Turner Gallery in Newcastle in 2022-23.

Sandra is currently working on a series of landscape paintings inspired by northern railway journeys. Movement is very much present in this current series. Sandra enjoys the sense of freedom and speed looking from a moving train out to distant horizons, catching individual details such as farm machinery, reflections, and puddles. Also the contrast of standing waiting, contemplating the railway sheds and specifics of the location.

Collectors are highly encouraged to frequently revisit Sandra's page on UK Artists, as she is consistently active and showcases something new and stunning with each update.

He has participated in more than 16 exhibitions throughout the United Kingdom including cities such as Torquay, Ipswich, London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Doncaster, Bristol, and Bath, as well as various virtual exhibitions.

Three of his paintings are being exhibited at the D31 art gallery in Doncaster as part of their "Togetherness" exhibition and Jon was selected as one of their featured artists.

Jonathan has a solo show scheduled at the Garden Gallery in Cheltenham from September 20th to 26th, 2023. After numerous advancements and opportunities in his artistic journey over the past year, he is determined to further expand and strengthen his foundation, experiences and career.
