Memories of Trees - Current Headline Exhibition
Peter is a self-taught artist who works with a variety of media, pen and ink,gold/silver leaf, pencil, intaglio and photography.
The bedrock of Peter's inspiration is an emotional response to the natural world and the elements that create and influence its evolution. Trees, plants, organic shapes, landscapes and rock strata are a particular inspiration to him.
In addition to his nature images, he also enjoys searching for inspiration in urban and coastal areas, buildings, churches, machinery etc. Street Photography is a growing interest.
The wilderness, beauty and isolation on the west coast of Scotland had a dramatic impact on Peter and were the initial impetus for him starting to draw/photograph in an attempt to interpret what he was feeling and seeing.
In many of Peter's collections, trees have featured prominently, and he counts studying, observing and spending time with trees a great joy.
This exhibition's theme has chimed very deeply, giving him the opportunity to exploit both his own emotional approach to the work and to encourage each visitor's personal emotional response to the artworks.
Peter says;
"Aspects of my Fine Art Photography are becoming more impressionistic and this is the focus for my exhibition. Impressionist photography is the first step to abstraction – you will have a clear idea of what you're looking at.
Impressionist photography aims to make an image that viewers will respond to emotionally – leaving you space to see what you feel, not just what you see. It focuses on capturing atmospheres, changing light and movement while not prioritising sharpness. I am only partly suggesting detail, rather than focusing on it and emphasising shapes, light, colour and the relationship between them as I venture beyond representational images.
As my work evolves, shape, light and colour are superseding the importance of the actual subject in some areas of my work as I use Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), longer shutter speeds, layers, blending, filters and multiple exposures.
I am using my camera as a paintbrush. The style itself is an impression of life. My work is an emotional response to the natural world and the elements that create and influence its evolution. I am attempting to share with you what I am feeling and seeing.
Trees, plants, organic shapes, landscapes, seascapes, natural structures and rock strata are a particular inspiration to me.
The knowledge and ceremonies of Indigenous peoples and their connection with the earth and the wider universe are of great interest to me.
I am drawn to abstract shapes, ideas, or concepts that I feel compelled to capture and isolate, drawing attention to, acknowledging and highlighting their beauty - this will form the basis of a new image, whatever the medium.
