Allowing myself to play with colour, concept, intuition and visualisation, has resulted in me considering myself as a ‘creative’ rather than a traditional painter. I'm inspired by everyday life and nature. My traditional oil paintings are mainly painted from life and I take time whilst "setting up" the still life.

My abstract pieces are painted on paper, canvas and/ or wooden panels and consist of mixed media, namely; collage, inks, acrylics and dry media. Starting with a concept or idea, I jump right in with colour or line. From there onwards, it's a matter of intuition guiding me. Sometimes I write a poem or thoughts down onto the paper as a starting point. This inspires me in the choice of colour and direction of the piece.

My art journey started in Cape Town, South Africa, where I studied sculpture & developed a love of 3D design. I furthered my studies at Frank Joubert School of Art in Cape Town and continue to learn online and with various teachers worldwide.

My subject matter is diverse and interpretations varied. Design is at the heart of the composition and therefore a successful painting. I often use my little sketchbook to make a quick sketch or jot down my thoughts or inspiration. Drawing allows me to get a ‘feel’ of the place and I often refer to these sketches when painting back in the studio.

I am a member of Surrey Artists Open Studios and several art societies and exhibit in their exhibitions.

Margie has recently started teaching in her home studio and is finding she really enjoys teaching and inspiring others.

Margie classifies herself as a ‘creative’ rather than a traditional painter.
She thinks conceptually and paints intuitively. She is inspired by whatever the day brings.
In 1998, she studied ceramics with Maxi Heyman in Constantia, Cape Town, South Africa,
where she was taught how to develop a concept and create objects with form and design
in mind. She joined adult education at the Frank Joubert School of Art in Cape Town in
2004. She continued with sculpture and started painting classes in 2004. This was a very
stressful time in her life and art became a release and passion. She has studied with
various teachers in S. Africa and America (online).
Her work has evolved over the years as she searched for a more specific style to emerge.
By allowing herself to play with colour, concept and visualisation has led her to define
herself as creative. Associating with a specific genre is far easier for many but Margie
prefers being free to delve and dig deep to create art in the way that she does. The
closest genres that she associates with, are traditional painting and abstraction.
Her subject matter is diverse and interpretation varied. She loves most art materials but
can confirm that her favourites are mixed media and acrylic inks as they are exciting and,
using them impulsively, can often result in a ‘happy accident’. Inspiration comes in many
forms, whether it be a thought, a bunch beautiful flowers or fruit, or a captivating scene.
Design is at the heart of composition and therefore a successful painting. She takes a little
sketchbook with her on her travels so she can jot down her thoughts making a quick
sketch. Drawing allows her to get a ‘feel’ of the place and she often edits out objects that
do not need to be included in the finished painting.
Margie has recently started teaching in her home studio and is finding she really enjoys
teaching and inspiring others.
