After college I started my own business building Enterprise racing sailing dinghies but had to give up in the late 1990's after developing MS which caused me mobility & eyesight problems, RNIB registered. I also am in remission from bone marrow Myeloma cancer.On the positive side this allowed me to get back to creating art.I am not trying to represent what a camera can do but want colour & composition to express a feeling.Printing is a way of overcoming MS tremors which enables me to continue working.Painting & printing are all about decision-making which I enjoy.I am interested in colour and composition in an abstract way. I find colour reflects my mood.I like words for their own sake, to title & paint about & represent my paintings. My art mainly is a natural progression of my ideas, I think of myself as an Abstract modernist painter always looking to invent, re-invent.
Going to Bristol art college 76-79 gave me the confidence to follow my own ideas, at the same time looking at & learning from other artists, old & new.
Visiting artists & lecturers who I met and influenced me include:
Patrick Heron, Rose Hilton, Hassal Smith, William Scott, Patrick Hughes, Ivon Hitchens, Terry Frost, Maggie Hambling, Peter Fuller, Alf Stockham & Paul Feiler (my personal tutor).
